Can You Dye Your Hair While Pregnant? My Honest Advice

One of the most common questions I get from clients is whether it’s safe to colour your hair during pregnancy. It’s completely understandable to feel cautious, but the good news is that, in most cases, it is considered safe.
Yes, you can colour your hair while pregnant. Most research shows that the small amount of chemicals absorbed through the scalp during colouring is minimal and not considered harmful. Many of my expectant clients continue their usual colour routines safely.
That said, the first 12 weeks are when your baby’s major organs develop, so many choose to wait until the second trimester for peace of mind. If you do colour your hair earlier, I always recommend choosing techniques that avoid direct contact with the scalp, and making sure the space is well ventilated.
Personally, I always advise going to a salon rather than using home kits during pregnancy. Professional salon brands often offer gentler formulas designed for more sensitive clients or those who prefer to avoid stronger ingredients. A salon is always the best and safest option, as we can ensure correct application and use products that are both gentle and appropriate.
If you do prefer to colour your hair at home, make sure you wear gloves, work in a well ventilated area and never leave the product on longer than instructed.
In terms of colour choices, highlights, lowlights or balayage are ideal during pregnancy because the colour is applied away from the scalp. This means minimal skin contact and reduced exposure.
Many mums to be also feel more comfortable choosing ammonia free or low odour options, especially if they are sensitive to smell. While there is no strong evidence that hair dye causes harm when used correctly, it’s always about doing what feels right for you.
For me, it’s about balance. You can absolutely maintain your hair during pregnancy, it just might mean making a few small adjustments so you feel confident, comfortable and well looked after.
