A little about how we got started as a Manchester hair salon.

Melissa has always had a passion for hair. Family photos show her cutting her dolls’ hair, aged four, before graduating on to her two sisters! At just 24 years old, Melissa opened her salon with the vision to design beautiful hair to the highest possible standards in a calm, relaxing environment.

Since then, the salon has won numerous awards including Best UK Salon (twice), Best Client Service and Best Independent Salon. Two-time North West Hairdresser of the Year finalist herself, Melissa and the team have also won several creative awards for both their cut and colour work.

She trained in precision cutting with Sassoon, gaining Distinctions in both her Classic and Creative tests – a rare feat in what is recognised as the world’s most challenging cutting programme. She then completed the Wella Master Colour Programme, achieving top marks in her exams. Melissa is now a judge of national and international hairdressing competitions.

Our approach

At our salon, we’re passionate about creating beautiful, healthy hair using the most modern techniques, tools, and products available. From precision cutting and lived in blended colour to advanced treatments like K18, everything we do is designed to deliver the best possible results for your hair—both in how it looks and how it feels.

Our stylists are highly trained and experienced, and we take a thoughtful approach to every part of your service. Every member of the team are retrained in our MT MasterClass techniques to ensure they are specialists in all hair types.  We choose to use Vess brushes instead of round brushes to blow-dry—this allows us to check your cut with precision and ensures your style is easy to recreate at home. We also avoid thinning scissors, as they can weaken the hair over time, and instead use techniques that maintain strength and structure. When it comes to short styles, we prefer the more detailed 'scissor over comb' method over clippers, giving you a more refined and longer-lasting finish.

We want all of our clients to have the best possible experience in the salon so that you can relax and enjoy an energising time with us.

Giving yourself enough time

Our purpose is to give each of our clients a memorable experience whilst designing beautiful hair, and we set aside time to do this without rush. To make the most of your visit we ask that you arrive five minutes before your appointment. However, we understand that sometimes things happen that cause delays; that’s why we have a 15-minute cut-off time for all appointments. If you are running late, please contact us so that we can let your Hair Designer know.

Skin tests for colour

We believe in fully looking after our clients’ wellbeing while they are with us, so we always insist on a skin test 48 hours before any colour is applied. Even if you have had lots of colour in the past, formulas change, and so do you. A skin test will make sure that your colour treatment with us is both beautiful and safe for you – a great combination…

Cancelling or moving your appointment

We will always try our best to accommodate any changes to appointments. However, all appointments cancelled within less than 24 hours may be subject to a 50% cancellation charge.

Getting the future appointment you want

To get what suits you best, you can book your next one, two or even three appointments before you leave the salon.  If you need an almost immediate appointment we have a reserve list which we review each day and we will do our best to accommodate you.

If you are not happy with your cut/colour

At Melissa Timperley hair salon we expect all our clients to be happy with their new hair style and colour. If you feel that the service agreed has not been fully achieved, we need to know as soon as possible (within 7 days) so we can help to resolve your concerns straight away.

We have a dedicated women-only area where clients who wear a hijab can have their hair done comfortably. Only female clients and female stylists will be present, ensuring a relaxed and respectful hair care environment.

How much will my appointment cost?

Hair is hair! Our clients pay for each service based on our time and expertise, not their gender. We’re proud to be one of the first salons in Manchester to offer gender neutral pricing to make the hair salon experience fairer and more inclusive for everyone, and it’s just one of the many reasons we’re one of the best men’s hair stylists around. We want everyone to look and feel their best, without being tied down to an outdated pricing system.

Melissa Timperley Salons is located in Manchester’s Northern Quarter and is easily accessible by tram, train, or bus. The nearest Metrolink tram stops are Shudehill Interchange (5 mins walk), Market Street (5–7 mins walk), and Piccadilly Gardens (6–8 mins walk). We’re also around a 10–12 minute walk from both Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria train stations.

Can I bring my laptop to my hair appointment?

Yes. Absolutely. You can bring your laptop along to your hair appointment. Our hair stations are large enough to comfortably accommodate you. We also have power sockets so you can charge your devices.

Will I still get the full salon feeling in a private space?

Absolutely. We’ve designed our private areas to give you that same salon feeling – from expert styling to a relaxing head massage – so you never feel like you're missing out on any part of the salon experience. It’s all about feeling amazing, inside and out, and getting the perfect haircut.
