Why the Best Haircut Is About More Than Your Face Shape

who what wear

I recently spoke to Who What Wear about the best hairstyles for square face shapes, and it's a topic I always find interesting because choosing the right haircut is about so much more than simply identifying your face shape.

Understanding Your Features

A square face shape is generally characterised by a strong, defined jawline, with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw sitting at a similar width.

But when I'm consulting with a client, I'm looking at the whole picture.

Their forehead, cheekbones, eyes, hairline and natural hair texture all play a part in deciding which haircut will work best.

Two people might have exactly the same face shape but suit completely different hairstyles.

Finding the Right Cut for You

I think face shape is a useful starting point, but it should never become a set of rules about what you can and can't have.

For someone with a square face, we might explore softer layers, movement around the face or a particular fringe shape, depending on which features they want to enhance.

It's also important to consider how the hair naturally falls, how much styling someone enjoys and what will work with their everyday routine.

For me, a great haircut is always about the individual. The goal isn't to change someone's features, but to create a shape that complements them and makes them feel confident.
