THE OSCARS: Why I Love a Slick Back for Events, Red Carpets and Weddings

When it comes to event hair, I’m always drawn to styles that feel effortless but make a statement, and a slick back does exactly that. It’s one of those looks I come back to time and time again for red carpets, weddings and special occasions.
The slicked back look has such enduring popularity because it delivers instant polish with minimal distraction. It opens up the face, sharpens the jawline and cheekbones, and creates a clean, modern silhouette that works with almost every neckline and outfit. It also has a timeless quality, whether worn glossy and refined or with a more textured finish.
What I love most about this style is how confident it feels. It always looks intentional, never overdone, which is why it remains such a staple on the red carpet. We’ve seen it recently at the Oscars on celebrities like Renate Reinsve, Rose Byrne and Charithra Chandran, each wearing their own version of the look.
The more masculine leaning version of the slick back has become especially popular, and I think that’s what makes it feel so current. That contrast between structured, almost androgynous hair paired with a dramatic gown creates something really powerful. It brings strength and attitude to softer, more feminine styling.
For me, a slick back is about confidence, control and simplicity. It’s a look that lets your features, your outfit and your presence do the talking, which is exactly what you want for a big moment.
