How to Choose the Right Hair Mask for Your Hair

I recently spoke to Glamour about hair masks and how choosing the right one can make a real difference to your hair's health.

The best hair mask depends on your hair type and concerns, so it's important to look at the ingredients rather than just the branding.

If your hair is dry or damaged, I recommend looking for nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil or avocado oil to restore moisture and shine.

If your hair needs strengthening, choose formulas containing keratin, hydrolysed wheat protein or collagen peptides to help reduce breakage and support healthier strands.

For finer hair, opt for lightweight ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin or hyaluronic acid. These provide hydration without weighing the hair down.

I also love masks that contain ceramides, peptides and antioxidants, as they help repair the hair barrier and protect against environmental damage. Whenever possible, I recommend sulphate-free and silicone-free formulas to minimise build-up and keep hair healthy in the long term.

How I Apply a Hair Mask

Whether you're using a leave-in or rinse-out mask, always apply it to clean hair and focus on the mid-lengths and ends, where the hair is driest.

For rinse-out masks, leave the product on for 5 to 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. If you're using a leave-in treatment, apply a small amount to towel-dried hair and style as normal.

The biggest difference you'll see comes from consistency. Using the right mask regularly will leave your hair softer, stronger and noticeably healthier over time.
