Collagen and Hair Growth Chat With Glamour: What I Tell My Clients

Collagen is a word we are hearing everywhere right now, but what actually is it and can it really support hair growth
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It acts as one of the main building blocks for our skin, hair, nails, joints and connective tissue. I often describe it as the structural support system that helps keep everything strong, flexible and resilient. As we age, our natural collagen production declines, which can impact skin elasticity and may also influence hair health over time
When it comes to hair, collagen plays a supportive role rather than being a direct hair growth ingredient. Hair is primarily made from keratin, another type of protein. However, collagen contains amino acids that help the body produce keratin, which is essential for strong, healthy strands. It may also help support the scalp by contributing to skin structure and helping to combat oxidative stress, which can affect hair follicles
That said, quality matters
When choosing a supplement, I always advise avoiding collagen products with unnecessary fillers, artificial sweeteners, excessive sugars or added flavourings if you want the cleanest and most effective option. I also recommend staying away from products that do not clearly state the collagen source or the peptide type. If you are aiming to improve hair health, avoid collagen blends that include very low doses of active collagen, as these will not provide meaningful support
Consistency is equally important
I tell my clients that collagen should be taken daily for at least eight to twelve weeks to see meaningful improvements. It is also beneficial to take collagen with vitamin C rich foods or to choose a supplement that already includes vitamin C to enhance absorption
In my experience, collagen works best as part of a bigger picture approach. Healthy hair growth starts from within, so a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, healthy fats and key vitamins is essential. Collagen can be a helpful addition, but it is not a magic fix. Strong, glossy hair is usually a reflection of overall health, patience and consistency.
