A Haircut Is About So Much More Than Hair

I recently attended the launch of the British Beauty Council's The Impact of Beauty report at Selfridges, and it was lovely to see research highlighting something I've believed throughout my career: hairdressers play a much bigger role in people's lives than we often realise.

More Than Just a Hair Appointment

One of the statistics that really stood out to me was that 42% of frequent beauty and personal care users have discussed personal issues or important life events with a beauty professional.

When I think about the relationships we build with our clients, it makes complete sense.

As hairdressers, we're there for so many milestones. Weddings, new jobs, babies and celebrations, but also the more difficult moments in life.

Sometimes we're there to listen, sometimes to celebrate, and sometimes simply to provide a familiar face and a little bit of normality.

Supporting Our Local Communities

Another finding I found particularly interesting was that 86% of people visiting the high street for a personal care appointment said it was their main reason for going, with half also spending money in another local business.

As the owner of an independent salon in Manchester's Northern Quarter, I see how important that connection is.

When someone books a haircut, they might also visit the coffee shop next door, have lunch locally or pop into another independent business.

We're not just part of our high streets. We're helping to keep them thriving.

The Real Value of Hairdressing

As we approach ten years of Melissa Timperley Salons, this report has made me reflect on the relationships we've built and the people who've walked through our doors.

Of course, our technical skills and professionalism are incredibly important, but so are the trust, confidence and human connections we create.

I'm proud to be part of an industry that contributes so much to people's lives, both inside and outside the salon.

Because sometimes, a haircut is about so much more than hair.
